Note 2: Ernie was born to William and Janet in Bushey, the second son with four siblings. The family lived on Clay Hill, Bushey. Their life was hard. Ernie started work as a baker's boy at the age of fourteen, he was employed by Nixes's Bakery. He was a member of Bushey Home Guard until he was old enough to enlist in the British Army, Sixth Airbourne Division [Red Berets]. He also served in the medical division as a stretcher bearer. The day before D. Day he parachuted into France; he and a friend were blown off-course and ended up with the Canadians. His officer in charge was the actor Robert Todd. Years later Ernie took wife Joan back to France to show her where he had served; they went to the Pegasus Bridge and had tea in the cafe and did the tour. The person giving the tour announced that today there was a special person on the tour, Ernie looked around him only to find that the guide was reffering to him, the group gave him a round of applause, he was thrilled. Ernie married Joan in 1944 at St.Matthews, Oxhey. After the war ended Ernie was sent to Palastine with the catering Corp, where he stayed until he was de-mobed. On returning to civy street he returned to baking. Joan and Ernie lived with Joan's parents in Thorpe Cres., Oxhey. Keith was born in 1949 and they moved to Southend-on-Sea, Essex where Ernie worked as a Baker. Julie was born in 1952, six weeks later they had moved to Newbury where Ernie had a job at The Devonia Bakery, Northbrook St. ;prop.Mr Parsons. To help with the poor wage Ernie also had an early morning paper round which he shared with Bill Uchbrict ; they alternated days and nights and would do the round on the week of nights....times were still hard. The house in Gloucester Rd. was tied to the bakery job, so when Ernie wanted to change his job another house had to be found. In 1966 a house was purchased with a great deal of scrimping, from Newbury Council; the house in Kersey Cres. was to be Ernie's home until he passed away in 1992. Free to find another job Ernie worked for a short time on a mobile fruit and veg van, not a good move; the owner of the business would not insure the vehicle, he was also reluctant to pay Ernie any wages! Ernie went to work as a milkman for Good's Dairy, later Express Dairies. This job he did until his hips gave out. He then went on to be an internal auditor for Express Dairies until his retirement aged sixty-five. Ernie was highly respected by his work colleagues. After Ernie's retirement he took on the post of Treasurer to The Friends of Newbury Hospital, a charitable institution.

Ernie died from Lung Cancer in 1992, just seventy years and two weeks.
