1). Restrictions apply to Coroners reports and files

Coroners reports and files dating up to and including 1978 are restricted for 50 years from date of registration to protect personal privacy.
(For example a file registered in 1940 becomes open in 1991)

Coroners reports and files dating from 1979 to 30 June 2007 are restricted for 70 years from date of registration to protect personal privacy.
Coronial records (excluding indexes and registers referred to below) dating from the implementation of the Coroners Act 2006 (1 July 2007) onwards are restricted for 100 years from the date of file closure as many records contain highly sensitive medical information.
Coronial file indexes and registers are open access.

2). Preservation Conditions for Inquests 1963-75

Coroners Inquests 1963-1975 are stored on microfilm in a temperature controlled vault and must be brought to room temperature gradually. Consequently, a microfilm must be ordered at least twenty four hours before it can be brought to the reading room for consultation. Viewing is subject to approval and is by appointment only.
